Health and Care in the Digital Single Market

25 April 2018 – The European Commission is putting forward a set of measures to boost the free flow of non-personal healthcare data in the Digital Single Market. Personalised medicine is one of three priorities of the initiative.

In line with the European Commission's Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy, the European Commission published a Staff Working Document and a Communication Document on Digital Transformation of Health and Care in the Digital Single Market. These policy documents give direction to EU activities in this field for the coming years.

The Communication on Digital Transformation of Health and Care in the Digital Single Market identifies three priorities:

  1. Citizens' secure access to their health data, also across borders;
  2. Personalised medicine through shared European data infrastructure;
  3. Citizen empowerment with digital tools for user feedback and person-centred care.

Furthermore, the Communication provides a concrete set of actions on how each priority can be attained (see the infographic for an overview). Futher information can be found in the corresponding EC documents and press releaes.
