South African Medical Research Council joins ICPerMed

04 October 2022 - ICPerMed welcomes the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) as new member. SAMRC is the largest funder of health research in Africa with a key focus on the translation of research into new or improved policies, practices, processes and products to improve health outcomes.

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) has been in existence for 50 years and is categorized as a public entity or parastatal organisation. They fund solutions throughout the disease progression continuum, from prevention to diagnosis and treatment. Personalised or precision medicine is one of their focus areas.

They recently extended their portfolio for precision medicine to include the management of communicable diseases such as HIV and COVID-19. Funded projects look at host genetic factors affecting disease progression or use NGS technology for characterisation of HIV infection to inform anti-retroviral treatment strategies. In addition, personalised medicine projects are funded in several ongoing programmes, often together with other international funding organisations.
