International Personalised Medicine Perspectives – Webinar on Integrating Genome Medicine into Healthcare in Germany

07 September 2026 – As part of the ICPerMed Strategic Working Group on Internationalisation, a webinar titled ‘Integrating Genome Medicine into Healthcare in Germany: The genomDE Model Project‘ will be organised on 29 October 2026, running from 15:00 to 16:30 CEST. Germany’s national genomDE Model Project on Genome Sequencing (genomDE MP) represents a central component of the Federal Ministry of Health’s strategy to advance genome medicine. In this seminar, we will present the conceptualisation, built-up and current status of genomDE MP.

GenomSeq aims to establish and evaluate standardised, quality‑assured structures for genomic diagnostics and personalised therapy development across the German healthcare system. A key element is the secure and highly regulated provision of clinical and genomic data for both patient care and research. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) operates the project’s data platform, while pseudonymisation processes are overseen by an independent trust office at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Participating clinics contribute clinical and genomic data, which, after pseudonymisation, are stored in decentralised clinical data nodes and genome data centres. Data services approved by BfArM enable controlled access for clinical decision‑making and scientific research.

As of end of May 2026, more than 24,000 quality-controlled data sets have been submitted by the currently 30 participating health care providers. These data sets reflect the enrolment of more than 12,000 patients. More than 1,200 terabytes of data have been transmitted, and the first nearly 200 long‑read whole‑genome datasets have been delivered. With the kick‑off meeting for the evaluation of the model project in February 2026 in Berlin, the initiative has entered a new and exciting phase.

After finalisation of the ongoing establishment of technical infrastructure for data usage, for the first time in Germany, researchers will gain access to large, high‑quality datasets linking genome sequencing results with clinical information. These data will support the development of new therapies, the personalisation of treatment strategies, and the discovery of genetic mechanisms underlying disease. As part of the National Strategy for Genome Medicine, genomDE MP will increasingly integrate with national registries and international genomic initiatives to strengthen scientific collaboration. In the long term, the project will pave the way for the routine implementation of genome‑based medicine in the German healthcare system.

Andreas Till studied Biology in Mainz and Kiel and received his doctoral degree in Molecular Cell Biology from the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel in 2004. Following a postdoctoral phase, during which he focused on functional genomics of chronic inflammatory diseases, he became head of the Cell Biology research group, concentrating on signal transduction and cellular stress responses. A successful DFG project grant enabled him to conduct research on selective autophagy at the University of California, San Diego, from 2009 to 2013.

After returning to Germany, Dr. Till completed his habilitation in Molecular Biomedicine and subsequently worked as a team leader at the Institute of Reconstructive Neurobiology at the University of Bonn, while simultaneously contributing to Life & Brain GmbH on stem cell–based models of neurodegenerative diseases. In 2021, Dr. Till became Head of Laboratory and Research in the Department of Internal Medicine at University Hospital Bonn in the field of Endocrinology, and since April 2024 he has served as the head of the data platform for the genomDE model project on Genome Sequencing at the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) (see Till et al., Nature Medicine, 2025).

Dr. Till is a member of several scientific societies, has published more than 70 papers, and has successfully acquired substantial competitive third‑party funding. His scientific interests center on the relationship between genomic alterations and the development, manifestation, and therapeutic targeting of human diseases.

This is the nineth event of a series of webinars with the aim to overall increase the awareness about Personalised Medicine and to share information about activities and successes in the field.
